Is it really possible to be correctly oriented? I mean think about it. Einstein told us that everything is relative. Your car odometer says you are traveling 70 miles an hour. But Einstein says, relative to the sun you are traveling millions of miles per second. If YOU feel like you are standing “up,” and look “up” into the sky, what direction do students in China look?
My English literature prof said that each person lives by his own self-righteous standard of morality. There is no absolute standard of right and wrong.
That is how many students live, but who is the prof to tell students that morality is relative? Since when has a prof ever been the infallible source of knowledge? By what authority do they claim to know that moral relativity is itself a universal, absolute truth?
You know full well that everyone looks for an excuse to engage in activities that are “wrong.” What better excuse is there than to say that there is no absolute right or wrong?
Moral relativity arguments defy gravity and common sense. After all, when was the last time your teacher let you grade your own test because all answers are relative? Whose answers should be used for grading tests? If there are no absolutes, why does gravity always pull you to the surface of the earth? Why is fire always hot? Why is matter always made of quarks? Why is friction always present between touching masses? Why do all people experience emotions such as jealousy, anger, and love? Why do all societies of people have a code of conduct or morality that individuals are expected to abide by? Why do all societies make laws?
The fact is, there are absolutes in our world, and their presence argues for the presence of moral absolutes as well. Everything is not relative. There are absolute standards. Don’t be fooled by those who would disorient you with the claim that there is no absolute moral standard of right and wrong. Remember, moral relativity is nothing more than an excuse to do wrong. Proper orientation requires knowing the standards and what is expected of you. Proper orientation is necessary for making right choices.
