Smart Tips For Smart University Students
Student life at the University is much different than at home. There is an atmosphere of excitement and anxiety due to the numbers of students from all different walks of life located in one place. There is the unknown of who you will meet, what friends you will make, how hard your classes will be. And then there is the question of whether you will succeed.
Below are seven tips on how to succeed as a student at the university. These tips come from the life experiences of others. It is better to learn from others’ mistakes than to painfully repeat them.
1. Work smarter not harder
Hard work is essential to succeed at anything. But you can do more if you work smart as well. Working smarter saves you time so you can do more and have more fun. Look for people who are succeeding at what you what to do and ask them what they do. Learn from others by watching and learning. Be willing to change your habits and to learn new methods that help you work smarter.
2. Be Responsible
As student at the University, you make your own choices. You decide to go to class. You decide how much you will study for a test. You decide what time you will go to bed and what time you will wake up. Your success or your failure will be determined by what you choose to do. The consequences are yours to own. If you do stupid things, don’t blame others for the consequences. You can’t change what others do. But you can change what you do.
3. Go To Class
If you plan to succeed in school, you must go to class. Class time is where will you learn about the subject you need to succeed in your career. It is the time you will learn what the teacher expects you to know for a test. It is a time for you to network with friends, share ideas, and learn more by talking about a subject. Don’t fall for the arrogant boast that some students make about already knowing what a class is all about. They are in school because they don’t know what they are talking about. The students who do well in class, go to class.
4. Watch Your Budget
Money is limited resource in your life. You must learn how to spend it wisely. You need to know how much money you have each week or month to spend. You need to make sure you have enough money to cover your weekly or monthly obligations. Don’t commit to spending more than you have. Debt causes stress and the problems that result from debt can distract you from doing well in school. Making a budget is easy to do. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know how to make a budget for yourself. Write down the expenses you know about for the month and write down the income you have to spend for the month. As a University student, you should be able to make a simple budget.
5. Ask For Information
The University has resources to help you succeed. Millions of dollars are spent to make these resources available to you. The smart thing for you to do is to find out where these resources are and how you can take advantage of them. From money to tutoring, there is no lack of resources on campus to help you succeed. Are you smart enough to discover what these resources are and how to use them?
6. Stay Healthy
Nutrition, hygiene, rest, and exercise are essential for good health. You are more likely to succeed and experience less pain if you take care of your health. It is easy for students to neglect their health due to stress and time constraints of class assignments and tests. If you let your health deteriorate, you will not study as well as you could, and you may end up sick in bed. Maintaining your health is the smart way to ensure that you succeed and enjoy more time doing the things you want to do.
7. Pray For Spiritual Well-being
The happiest students are the students who have found peace with God. They are emotionally and mentally content. Their eternal destiny is secure. This is the most important human need, and yet it is the most neglected need on campus. It is smart to take care of your spiritual needs just as you must take care of your physical needs. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Jesus lived in peace with compassion, kindness, and hope. He not only knows the way to eternal happiness, but He is the way to eternal happiness. His way is the smart way.
